　據美國《紐約時報》報道，動物王國的武器裝備在牙齒和爪子著稱，但科學家發現一些動物的軍備武器進行成了防禦工具而不是進攻性的殺戮工具。

在重新考慮動物的性選擇情況下，美國蒙大納州大學的生物學家道格拉斯J.艾姆倫博士表示，自然選擇的一種特殊形式導致動物出現了古怪的裝飾和武器裝備。他是在研究巴拿馬的特種甲蟲特種之後提出這一結論的，為了證實這一點，他廣泛研究全球的甲蟲，發現它們的武器裝備確實是多種多樣。

不過，它們的武器主要有二種策略：一種是以聖甲蟲為代表，它們通常切割動物糞便，然後帶走用作個人消費；另一種策略是其它甲蟲擅長挖地洞，將動物糞便拉到它們的地洞裏貯存起來。艾姆倫驚訝地發現，隻有挖地洞的甲蟲進化出了角，雄甲蟲用它們的角來保護自己的地洞不受其它雄甲蟲的侵犯，而分割動物糞便的甲蟲也時不時得和其它雄甲蟲戰鬥，但它們沒有長角。然而，甲蟲生長和攜帶武器需要成本，艾姆倫博士發現，甲蟲為了減少成本，它們的角呈現小型化和裝飾化趨勢。由於這些角的主要作用是攻擊其它雄甲蟲，因此它們的武器雖小但確實也具有很大的破壞性。不過，裝飾性武器還是甲蟲成功繁衍的標誌性特征。以下是全球具有特別武器裝備的一些甲蟲。
