Another real story happened at Calthech:

When a later famous scientist started to work at a lab in Caltech, his boss (a Nobel scientist) asked him to find the volume of a bulb. Because it's not perfect sphere, he measured the size at several points, and tried to do complex calculation. His boss came, "what takes you so long?" "It's difficult to calculate", he answered. "Why don't you fill water in, then measure the volume of the water?"
