Three Ninety Nine

Good Fortune was selling bayberry yesterday and people said its really sweet. I went there today but cannot find a single one. I asked an acquainted worker there for help. He told me they were all sold out but he can let me have his reserve personally. After a few times humble rejection I finally accepted it with a million thanks. He told me the price in Cantonese: Three ninety-nine. That’s a one-pound pack. Great! It’s inexpensive. Thinking my wife would like it I felt even sweeter than the fruit. However, at the counter I was told to pay $32.99. And I finally figured out that’s exactly what the worker told me. I misheard it as $3.99 because I do not understand Cantonese. Man! My world exploded in front of me! I had to admit I was too shaggy to enjoy such a goodish fruit and left the store!
