If you are a reviewer for a journal, the editor would mail you the manuscript along with a letter with journal letter head saying that you are selected as a reviewer for this MS and please review this MS and give your comments within x months. If you really did reviewing in the past, you can write to the editor who asked you to review the MS and ask him or her to write a proof letter for you. Hope I answer your question.
