Don't blame anyone, you are responsible for your legal status. You should know your J1 ended with your job and had only 1 month grace period.
Now You have to go back and apply H1b in Chengdu consulate since you have a gap. Leave US ASAP, don't be out of status too long, that will impact your visa application.
