J1 is fine if you don't have a choice. But J1 also takes several months to get approval. I really don't understand why this school does not want to pay just $1225 more to get the H1 for you and then, you can work for them immedately. You may talk to the Dept. Chair whether the Department can pay the premium processing fee of $1225 for the H1 petition.
