Make it a safe way, figure out OPT-H4 first
As long as you start WORKING WITH EAD, your status is AOS.
NIW is risky at this point, so I would suggest you no to think about EAD first.

1. Work until your OPT expires
2. At the same tim, Check the processing time of your regional service center online and see how long it would take to change to H4. Then you could figure out a schedule to submit your application before your OPT expires. The ideal situation is you could connect to H4 just after your OPT expires. From your timeframe, i guess you could wait till your hu*****and has renewed his H1.
