If you want to keep H-1B status, and if you have valid H-1B visa on your passport, then you can return in H-1B status. I guess that you only have F-1 visa on your passport, right? If you do not want to use AP, then you need to go to U.S. consulate to apply for H-1B visa. If you return to the US using AP, you will then be in Parole status, rather than H-1B status. According to an INS memo, "Until the final rule is published, an alien who was an H-1 or L-1 nonimmigrant, but who was paroled pursuant to a grant of advance parole, may apply for an extension of H-1 or L-1 status, if there is a valid and approved petition. If the Service determines the alien's application for an extension of nonimmigrant status, the decision granting such an extension will have the effect of terminating the grant of parole and admitting the alien in the relevant nonimmigrant classification." In another words, you can change your status from Parole to H-1B after coming back.
