I've done this a couple of times and have had different pleasant and unpleasant experiences. First of all, it depends on where you claim as your residence. As a Canadian PR or citizen for that matter, and if you claim your country of residence as Canada, then in theory, you cannot drive a US licensed vehicle into Canada. I did this once and the Canadian border agent at WA/BC crossing gave me a very hard time. But she finally let me in. If you claim your country of residence as the U.S., you are allowed to drive a US licensed vehicle into Canada. I did this twice while I was F1 student in the U.S. However, that begs the question why you are in the U.S. while you maintain a Canadian PR status. One of the two times I claimed to be F1 student, the border agent again gave me a very hard time. So if you have a similar case here, you should be cautious – make up reasons before you go. After several times of unpleasant experiences, I have been renting Canadian licensed vehicles if I need to drive into Canada as a Canadian PR. If you are in a border area, such as Seattle, Buffalo, you may request Canadian licensed vehicles from rental companies. But availability is a different story. Good luck!
