To pjiang: Citizenship application

My son received his U.S. permanent resident card a year ago based on my I-485 application. He is 17 years old and going to college soon. I want to stay in the resident alien status, but would like him to get U.S. citizenship. Can he independently apply for citizenship? If yes, how long does he need to wait before starting the application process? And how long does the process general take? Thank you very much.
