I want to stay in the resident alien status, but would like him to get U.S. citizenship. Can he independently apply for citizenship?
-Yes.
If yes, how long does he need to wait before starting the application process?
-He can file the application (N-400) after he got his green card at least for 4 years and 9 months.

And how long does the process general take?
-Several months to two years, case by case.
