If you enter US legally, basiclly you can adjust your status in US after the marraige with citizen even though you may be out of status. However, you are J2, you need to be waiver, that is why I said you need to go back to home to get new visa (But here I mentioned visa instead of waiver because in law is clear, but the really situation is kind of different) . However, if you can get waiver in US, you do not need to go back. The tough things for you will be when the interview with USCIS, you need to really be careful to answer a lot of tough question to make sure the officer belive that you really love your hu*****and instead of just staying in US
