I know I485 is personally, but since it is employment based, employer is still supposed to be sponsor till end of GC process, strictly speaking. Though you can argue employer might need do nothing after I485. Let's if something wrong with I485, can applicant go to court fight with USCIS for that if his/her current employer says they do not sponsor GC?
I just think it is an important step for post initiator, and do not want he/she feel it is risk free if he/she does like that, i.e. switch to an employer who do not sponsor GC.
