Also, if you have the I551 in your passport, that should be a proof to show that you can legally work in the US before that expiration date. I changed job during that time and I showed my passport to my HR. She just made a copy of that page and put in record (copied my WAC number from the passport stamp).

With that stamp, you should be able to travel outside of the US as well.

Anyway, don't be scare. You may not be as bad luck as me. I have a friend who filed her I-751 about 1 month after me to CA's Service Center as well. She got her permanent green card less than 6 months.
