I came to US as a Canadian citizen. So I could get TN. I changed to J1 due to the university's recomendation, and the international scholar office in 2002 ensured that it would not affect my future H1B and green card application because canadian citizens are not subject to the "two-year" rule. Indeed, I changed to H1B from J1 10 months later without any probem. I believe I am not subject to the rule. The big question is how I should reply to the RFE. As I said, our company's contract law firm actually has very limited knowledge about imingration issues. Many many thanks!
