B2 extension problem-- Help

My parents applied for a 6-month B2 extension, but we are still waiting for the receipt! (My money order was cashed on July 3). And they plan to leave US in next January, I am afraid that they will be treated as illegal immigrants when they go to the airport. Scary! Should we wait for the receipts or even the final result? What is the consequence, if they leave US with the old I94? Please help and give comments...
