Can I still keep legal status?

I-485 pending 1 month through primary applicant, lose H1 job before got EAD.
Some frineds on internet tell me I don't need to transfer to H4.
Then what is my leagl status? Will the time gap between losing a H1 job and getting a EAD become problem in future?
