Many employers actually extend the termination date with the separation package coverage, which could be several months longer than the real date. If you find a new job fast you should be fine. Check with your HR and maybe consult a lawyer if things appear complicated -- some EAP offered by employers provide 30 minutes free legal consulation.
It also depends on the specific format of layoff --
