Xiaobaitu, thanks a lot for your reply, but I really do not know what to do now. My situation is a little complicated. I intend to move to China to work but in the meantime want to maintain my pending I-485 status. That's why I want to keep a valid AP for as long as I can.
I'm going to leave US by the end of May. My AP expires late in Dec. If my greencard gets approved before Dec, then fine, no more issue. I can come back with the valid AP. However, I have to prepare if nothing happens between now and then. AP renewal is the only way, but I want least interruption to my work in China. If I have to file and wait for approval in the US, it means a roughly three-month waiting time. I don't mind coming back before the current AP expires, but I would like to have a renewed AP sending to my US address when I come back in Dec. From your reply, it seems that I have to be in US for the whole time between filing and approving.
So sorry for sending you such a long message, but could you think of any creative ways for my situation?
Thanks a lot!

I don't think you can do it: keep your I-485 & work in China
