What happens after one year on AOS status?

I will soon be traveling on AP and expect to become on AOS status. From what I read, it seems that the new I-94 will have the same expiration date as AP. Does anyone know what happens once the I-94 expires? Of course, one can travel again using another AP (if by then GC has not been issued yet) and receive another year as parolee. But, if one does not travel again after the expiration of the I-94, what should be done in terms of maintaining legal status?
