I don't think there is any negative effect. It is just useless. My case is Pro Se. I am not sure whether it will be helpful to hire a lawyer to take care of the business. I believe that the US attorney plays an important role in this process. If he/she pushes harder then CIS might take your case more seriously. I believe that the AUSA in charge of my case did not do anything in the past two months other than inquiring about my status occasionally.
