One of my friend is in the same boat as you are, he stayed in US for half a year, then find a job, and drive his US plate car to the border. Which of course, raised suspection from the officer. He was hit with a 3 years ban, and now he is in China.

Friend's car can be dangerous, they always do a plate number search. You may have to explain why you are not the owner. Rental car is also bad.
