EAD expires soon, what can I do?

My wife's EAD will expire on May 19th. She currently has a contract job. I sent the renewal application to VSC on March 7th. It's been two months. No message from them yet. What can I do? Will it be helpful to call them now? Some people said one could get an interim EAD from local office, but I found it's for those who didn't get approval after three months of waiting. Is there any chance to get one although we haven't waited that long?
