Don't do landing by air!!!

(1) Landing by air, you have to hand in your I-94 at US airport.

(2) You may not get your H visa in time. One of my friends had to wait for a month for resume check (weird)!

(3) You cannot get back to US if your H visa application is rejected. Disaster!!

Instead:

(1) Fly into Buffalo and drive a rental car to Canada.
(2) Land at the port of Niagara fall or South Ontario. With the stamp of landing in your passport and landing paper, you may get back to Canada without maple card.
(3) Apply your SIN in Canada.
(4) No problem to have your maple card sent to your friend address in Canada. It may take up to 4 months.
(5) Get back to US with your H status paper including the H application package and company documents.
(6) Schedule the appointment for H visa in US consulate in Canada and take all documents for H visa in case you are blocked at the US border.

You have to take risk even you land by driving.
