Coming back to US thru Mexico

As I know for international student, with a valid I-20, I will be able to come back to US from Mexico.

If I go back to China from US. But on my way back to US, I fly to Mexico first then come back to US thru Mexico. That way, if possible, I can eliminate the risk of renewing an US entry visa.

Does it work that way?
