But if you are talking about I485 being rejected, hence invalidate your EAD, then you have to leave the States and go to the consulate to apply for a new H4, then you will switch back to H4 easily. This happened to my friend's wife before. She couldn't go back to her job, but she get her H4 status back in this way.
EAD can be renewed.
