One's status during I485 pending period is called AOS: adjustment of status. With only AOS, it is legal for one to live in the States. But your hu*****and is the principal GC petitioner, he'd better keep his job until the GC is approved.
You have more freedom. You can work with EAD, you can stay home too, even without a valid H4 status, your AOS will allow you to stay legally until your I485 is approved.
I don't think your hu*****and will lose his H1 if he still works under H1 visa status for his employer. But he is free to use his EAD to take a second job at the same time.
