you should have soffit vents

which have mesh to prevent animals from getting into the attic. I am not sure the cause of this gap. You can use rodent-proof expanding foal to seal the gap, but that thing is very nasty if you touch it. Unfaced insulation is much easier to handle and the seal should be good.
