謝謝，才知道grandfather clause. WA state only requires the seller

Disclose the material defect the seller IS aware of. 在這個前提下，可以用"grandfather clause " retrospectively 申請permit, 從而把mother in law unit 在法律上變為“grandfathered in". 這是我從網上搜grandfather clause, 自己理解的最佳解決辦法。
