Copyright is something that is very pervasive. Once you created something, you own the copyright. No requirement to prove that you created "something new".
No registration required to establish your legal rights.

And what are those rights? The right to exclude others from making a copy, from distribution, from public performance or display, from making a derivative work.

The act of copying the website has the potential of violating several of these rights.

There are defenses available, but they are somewhat limited and does not apply to a slavish copy.
