If you are sick in the US and have to go to a hospital, you need to pay your medical bills, get receipts, and file for reimbursement with your insurance company back in Canada. This happened to me back in the early 1990s. I paid about $2000 to the hospital, and got back about $700 from my insurance company in Canada. The explanation : too many tests/procedures performed by the US hospital were considered “medically unnecessary” using the Canadian standard.
I have lived in the US since mid 1990s , so I don’t know if the same rules still apply today.
