I just got my V3 (with Cingular) remotely unlocked by GSMLiberty.com for $25. The way it works is: You pay them first; get a set of username/password with one unlock credit; full instruction to download/installation of the software(MotoPhoenix, actuall you can download the program for free, but you have to have the user/password and credit to unlock a phone);
And the software can make a fullbackup of your phone for free. A side effect: the program would downgrade the bootloader of the phone from 8.26 to 7.E0, if your phone is with bootloader 8.26. You can use other software to upgrade the bootloader back to 8.26.
After MotoPhoenix is installed, I believe there will be lots of drivers installed on your computer you can start to modding your phone -- such as install Chinese language etc. much more fun if you have time and interested in this.
