I did not use Dell. However, I have a Gateway. In Gateway, the hard drive has a special partition for the system backup and re-install. When XP failed boot, you could use re-install the XP and the re-install process automatically backs up your old files. You need read the Dell specification in detail. I guess that the Dell PC has a similar function as Gateway.
