turn off the system restore will save your 12% of the system volume. Use the way you discribed in the previous post. By default, windows XP will turn on the system restore for all partitions. Formatting will not help. However, there are some hidden system files that you can't see unless you change your View option. Those will take up space as well. Be careful, don't delete any system files, you will be in trouble later. You can also limit the size of your recycle bin by right click recycle bin and choose properties.
