do you mean the computer shuts down when you try to access bios by pressing DEL during start up? that has nothing to do with your harddrive. You can do that even without harddrive. Unplug your harddrive and try to access your bios again and see what happens.
Linus use different file system, which is of course not compatible with windoes. So when you install, you need to reformat your hd, XP will ask you to do so anyway.
