It is not common that video card goes bad. My 5+ year
AGP card is still good. But I can think of anything else.
Anyway, if your friend can lend you a card to let you
try out then it'll be great.

will do as good as any cards cost $100+ as far as 2-D
video is concerned, which is text editting, web browsing,
picture showing, etc. If you want to play games, which
use 3-D features intensively, then $100+ card is absolutely a must.
