the following works for windows xp:

Enter "my computer", right click over your u***** device, select "property", choose the "hardware" tab, locate your u***** device from the list, left click on it, pops up another window, then choose "policies" tab, check (choose) the "optimized for quick removal" tab.

That will do it.
You may try it on windows 2000, see if it works.
