Try to switch the jumper setting of the un-recognized HD between CS and SL for few times, sometimes it might work.
Don't know what OS you've installed, what brand of HDs you have. In XP, the Maxtor HD got very bad compatibility with Seagate/WD/Hitachi's.
Anyway, it's not that hard as you think to recover your data as long as the HD not dead. To connect to another computer, or use HD utility software or Data Recovery software, any of them may work!
