There are two groups

of big companies. One supports DVD-R and the other support DVD+R.
None of the groups can convince the other one to take their format
as standard. Both can record data about 4.7GB. Not too much diff
except confusing our consumers. If your DVD burner supports both
formats then you can buy either of them. As far as I know DVD-R
has a better compatibility when played on DVD players.
