wireless network slow speed

just bought a netgear mr814 802.11b router. it works but page load is very slow and some pics made in flash cannot even load. this also happens on a wired connection to a desktop. my system:
netgear MR814 b router,
desktop wired NIC
dell 600m laptop with intel 2100 3a mini pci adapter

anybody has clue how to make it fast?
