actually, any mail program having IMAP function built-in could communicate with Exchange. I thought your boss might want to save the money but if the client is not use Outlook there is no any point why using Exchange as your mail server. There are tones of free strong mail server software out there, Windows 2003 build-in POP3 is one of them.
