Info for CCNA Certification

Hello everybody:

I live in USA, and try to get an CISCO CCNA/CCNP certifcate. Since the price of on-line or in-school training is too high, I want to buy some books and study it by myself, then take an exam. Could anyone answer me the following questions:
1) How much I need to pay for exam? and
2) How and where can I sign up for such exam?
