I upgrade the patches frequently. But I have experienced
any slow down. There are two main reasons you should
upgrade the patches.

1. They fix bugs. If any of the patches doesn't apply
to you then you don't have to install it.

2. They fix security holes. There are a lot of viruses
which take advantage of security holes in Windows.
If you upgrade these patches frequently then you
won't get any of the deadly viruses in the pass few
weeks. This is most important one.
