brother, i have an amd/ecs too, it was giving me hell, should be the mobo problem...
now, i have another celeron 2gh / 1gb ram. it rips dvd at an extemely slow rate and when i burn it on dvd, it's only at about 2x. the problem is the dma setting. also depends on the mobo, you may need to set the corresponding drive settings. after i did that, i got extremely fast result. also check to see if you compressed your volume (though unlikely).
