Max peer connection can be set inside the advance setting of Shadow's Experimental version of BT client.
I would recommend using ABC BT 2.6.5 (single unified BT client interface base on the Shadow's BT). You may also wants to try BitComet 0.52 which uses a single port instead of multi-ports like the ABC BT. Many people who have had problems with multi-ports BT clients solved their problem by using BitComet0.52.
Azureus is also very popular. It is a java based BT client. You should probably try to limit the max peer connection to 30 at first. Then you may gradually raising it to higher number once the BT client is running smoothly. If none of the aforementioned works for you, then you may consider the other guy's suggestion--go buy a different network card.
