HD manufacturers use 1000Mbytes = 1G. So, your 120gig hard drive is only 120000 Mbytes 120000Mbytes/1024 = 117G but some of the hard drive space are reserved indexing during partition. Therefore, it is normal for a 120G hard drive to only have 114G of usable space. BTW, it is quite common for hard drives with same capacity label to have different amount space left after partition. This is due to fact that manufacturer allow certain amount of manufacturing imperfection. So, not every cluster on your hard drive is readable. The unreadable clusters will be marked unreadable before leaving the factory and shipping off to stores.
