It can be a very complicated question,because there are many many ways of "broken" for a hard drive: some can be fixed and some could not.Either way,the process can be compicated.
Borrow one and replace yours to see whether it is the HDD problem first.

I will suggest that you get a new or used one.For example, buy one from ebay,which has a lot listed.
Normally it will cost you $20-$100, depends on how big the size of HDD you want.
