retail copy of the winxp has only 30days (not 50) you can use without activation.

the upgrade copy of the winxp is the same as the full version winxp. the only thing deferent is ask you if you had a early copy of any windows 98, ME and so forth.

You don't need to install early version of windows before your windows xp installation, but you got to have one. In the medle of the installation it will ask you to put the old windows cd in. Then you are set.
