7-8 years desktop is not too old, if they are kind of good when you buy them.
My work horse bought in 2008 is 2 years out already, so that is 7 years PC. Still runs great.
My T60 from 2007 or before runs great when installed Windows 8.
If you just don't want it, remove the hard drive and hammer it. It is too small anyway.
Donate the PC instead of junk it, since PC in 2006 still runs great for emails.
