For DIY charging, I think you need

at least a soldering iron and some copper wires, some basic handyman skill etc..

For the cable, if you can find the PTC, you can use a wire short that part bypass it, then you cable should not have voltage drop. The risk is you lost the MB short protection provided by the PTC part.
